Hydrangea macrophylla - lacecaps

Hydrangea macrophylla with lacecap flowers belongs just lik the mophead Hydrangea, Hydrangea serrata and Hydrangea stylosa to the subsection : macrophyllae .

The Hydrangea macrophylla is endemic to the eastern coast of Japan and can be found in the coastal lowlands (up to 150m height max )where as the H.serrata and H. stylosa however are not be found below 500 m altitude .

Lacecaps Hydrangeas have the same habit as the mophead Hydrangea, only they have flat screen shaped flowers with small fertile inner flowers and large , conspicuous sterile florets , often standing in a nice contrast with the goal of attracting insects for the pollination .

Umbelliferous macrophylla types prefer, just like the mophead Hydrangea, a soft and mild climate , they often bloom from late June to late August , though there exist of course some exceptions .

Many Hybrids

In the course of history are numerous serrata types crossed with macrophyllatypes, with or without the help of man.

These hybrids often exhibit a dominant feature of one of the ancestors and are usually also called macrophylla or serrata , while it might be better to call them just Hydrangea + name of the cultivar ( according to Corine Mallet ) .

We choose to use the current (not always genetically correct ) ie when the macrophylla influence seems predominant we call them macrophylla, if otherwise we call them serrata .

The hardiness of these hybrid types depends on whether the serrata influence is predominant , serrata are native to mountainous regions and much more winter hardy Hydrangeas. Almost all of our Hydrangeas are own breeding , slow grown ( not forced) , Species bought in wholesale are allways first hardened before we put them to sale.
